SUMMARYFaeces samples from diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic lambs and goat kids aged 1-45 days were examined for enteric pathogens. Cryptosporidium parvum was detected in both diarrhoeic lambs (45 %) and goat kids (42%) but not in non-diarrhoeic animals. F5+ (K99+) and/or F41+ Escherichia coli strains were isolated from 26% and 22 % of the diarrhoeic lambs and goat kids, respectively, although these strains, which did not produce enterotoxins ST I or LT I, were found with similar frequencies in non-diarrhoeic animals. A F5-F41 -ST I' E. coli strain was isolated from a diarrhoeic lamb (0-6%). Verotoxigenic E. coli was isolated from both diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic lambs (4-1 % and 8&2 %, respectively) and there was no association between infection and diarrhoea. The prevalence of group A rotavirus infection in diarrhoeic lambs was very low (2 1 %). Groups A and B rotaviruses were detected in three (8-1 %) and five (13-5 %) diarrhoeic goat kids from two single outbreaks. Group C rotaviruses were detected in four non-diarrhoeic goat kids. An association of diarrhoea and infection was demonstrated only for group B rotavirus. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from 10-8 % of the diarrhoeic goat kids but not from non-diarrhoeic goat kids or lambs. Salmonella arizonae was isolated from a diarrhoeic goat kid (2-7 %) and the clinical characteristics of the outbreaks where these two latter enteropathogens were found different from the rest. Picobirnaviruses were detected in a diarrhoeic lamb. No coronaviruses were detected using a bovine coronavirus ELISA. No evidence was found of synergistic effect between the agents studied. Enteric pathogens were not found in four (8-7 %) and three (20%) outbreaks of diarrhoea in lambs and goat kids, respectively.

A longitudinal study was conducted on selected livestock farms to determine the prevalence of enteropathogens in diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic animals. The enteropathogens assayed from faecal samples and rectal swabs were bacteria (Escherichia coli, Campylobacter spp. Salmonella spp. and Yersinia enterocolitica), parasites (coccidia, gastrointestinal nematodes and Cryptosporidium spp.) and viruses (group A rotavirus and parvovirus). The prevalence of the enteropathogens in various animal species was related to age and month of the year. Generally, younger animals presented a higher prevalence of infection by enteropathogens than older animals while most infections occurred between the months of January and April. Livestock.Resumo Um estudo longitudinal foi realizado em fazendas de criação selecionadas, para determinar a prevalência de enteropatógenos em animais com ou sem diarréia. Os enteropatógenos analisados de amostras fecais e swabs retais foram: bactérias (Escherichia coli, Campylobacter spp, Salmonella spp e Yersinia enterocolitica); parasitas (coccídeos, nematóides gastrintestinais e Cryptosporidium spp) e vírus (Rotavírus grupo A e parvovírus). A prevalência dos enteropatógenos em várias espécies de animais foi relacionada à idade e mês do ano. Geralmente, a prevalência de infecção por enteropatógenos foi maior entre os animais mais jovens que entre os animais mais velhos, enquanto a maioria das infecções ocorreu entre os meses de janeiro e abril.

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence rate of VTEC in slaughtered sheep and goats and to evaluate the contamination rate of VTEC in slaughterhouses and butchers' shops in southern Jordan. 201 E. coli isolates from animals' faecal samples and 33 E. coli isolates from slaughterhouse/butcher shop samples were characterized by multiplex PCR (mPCR) reaction for detection of stx1, stx2, eae A and E-hly A virulent genes. Twenty-six virulent E. coli isolates were characterized by mPCR to seven different virulent patterns: stx1, stx1+stx2, stx1+eae A, stx1+E-hly A, stx1+eae A+E-hly A, eae A and E-hly A. It was found that VTEC comprised 6.4% and 21% of the total E. coli isolates from slaughtered small ruminants and slaughterhouses/ butchers' shops, respectively. The VTEC comprised 76.2% of the virulent isolates. The proportion of stx1:stx1+stx2 patterns was 19:1. It was found that the characterized complex VTEC (containing eae A and/or E-hly A) possessed three virulence patterns, including (VTEC) stx1 +eae A, (VTEC/EHEC) stx1 +E-hly A and (VTEC/EHEC) stx1 +eae A +E-hly A in percentages of 30%, 25% and 10%, respectively, in relation to the total VTEC isolates. Only two VTEC isolates were characterized as E. coli O157 and O26 serotypes, as highly pathogenic strains. Each of the O157 and O26 VTEC isolates was in a percentage of 0.4% in relation to the total E. coli isolates with virulent patterns stx1, eae A and E-hly A. The rest of the VTEC isolates were non-O157 VTEC. The antibiotic sensitivity test showed that the isolated VTEC was highly sensitive to gentamicin and co-trimoxazole and highly resistant to tetracycline and ampicillin.
