Prevalence and determinants of late-stage presentation among cervical cancer patients, a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Background An estimated 570,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide, and about 311,000 women died from the disease. Cervical cancer is possibly the most curable human cancer; if detected at the precancerous stage. Additionally, early diagnosis and management other factors are essential to decrease mortality rate among those patients. So this review was aimed to identify the prevalence and determinants of late-stage presentation among cervical cancer patients. Methods A systematic search had c… Show more

“…Although this was a single-center analysis, it is the first to describe the clinical features of cervical cancer at a national cancer center in Cambodia. Overall, there were 351 patients, representing approximately one-third of the estimated total cases occurring in the country (3) A systematic review of 25 studies examining the determinants of advanced-stage presentation found that women with no formal education and those residing in rural areas were significantly more likely to present in the advanced stage than their counterparts (19). However, in our study, these factors showed no association.…”

“…Thus, early diagnosis and successful treatment, as well as thorough follow-up, are critical for managing patients with gynaecological malignancies [24]. However, in lower middle-income countries like Pakistan, women with gynaecological cancers do not undergo any cancer screening programs due to poverty and illiteracy [25, 26]. They are commonly treated by general practitioners [22] and they are often referred to cancer specialists with an advanced stage of cancer [22, 25, 26], when it is too late and the prognosis is poor [13].…”

“…The key factors affecting the prognosis of patients with cervical cancer are whether the tumor has metastasized and whether the patient receives effective adjuvant therapy 3 . The early stage of cervical cancer is usually asymptomatic or non-specific, resulting in many patients not being diagnosed at an early stage 4 . Patients diagnosed at the early stages of the disease can have a good prognosis by undergoing radical surgery and adjuvant therapy, but patients with advanced tumors, metastases, or recurrence often have a poor prognosis 5 , and patients with advanced cervical cancer urgently need therapies to improve survival.…”
