Prevalence and correlates of selected alternative and complementary medicine in adult renal transplant patients

Abstract: Every eighth renal transplant recipient in this sample used some form of CAM. Of these, some used herbal medicines, of which some are known to interfere with certain immunosuppressive treatment (St John's wort/Chinese medicines). These findings indicate that it is important for health care providers working in renal TX to assess CAM use.

“…2,3,15 Practices of transplant recipients merit special attention as they stand out as a distinct group. 14 The present study has shown that although they shared the high prevalence of CAM use as other CKD patients, transplant recipients were more likely to report their practices to their physicians and tended to use body and mind procedures more frequently than natural products. A quarter of the transplant recipients who were not using CAM had only abandoned their practice after receiving their allografts; however, those with rising serum creatinine tended to use more CAM sometimes replacing it for their medications.…”

“…3,16 It may be crucial that nephrologists specifically inquire about such practices that may interact with medications including antihypertensive agents and calcineurin inhibitors, affect adherence to conventional therapy and may possibly be harmful. 3,9,14 Although some traditional therapies may have evidence supporting their use, some have no reliable evidence and others may be potentially harmful. 5,9 Nigella sativa was the natural product most frequently used by the study participants despite insufficient evidence to support its use in CKD patients apart from a possible antioxidant effect.…”
