“…The faecal prevalence of E. coli O157 in cattle was reviewed by Rhoades, Duffy, and Koutsoumanis () and shown to vary widely from 0% to 53.4%, depending on the country and cattle production system. A meta‐analysis on prevalence of E. coli O157 in North American cattle reported rates of 10.68% (95% CI: 9.17%–12.28%) in fed beef cattle (young cattle fed for slaughter), 4.65% (95% CI: 3.37%–6.10%) in adult beef cattle and 1.79% (95% CI: 1.20%–2.48%) in adult dairy cattle (Ekong, Sanderson, & Cernicchiaro, ). Such variations in shedding rates may be linked to animal age, with carriage rates of STEC O157 reported to be higher in calves and post‐weaned cattle than in adult finishing beef cattle (Ekiri et al, ).…”
