Prevalence and clinical features of adverse food reactions in Portuguese children

Abstract: BackgroundThe prevalence of adverse food reactions (AFR) has been increasing in the western world. Clinical manifestations are diversified and it may not be possible to clinically discriminate between IgE and non-IgE mediated AFR. In Portugal, the prevalence of AFR and food allergies in children is not known. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of AFR in central Portugal.MethodsPoint prevalence study in 3–11 year-old schoolchildren from Central Portugal. “…A few fruit allergens have similarities to pollens and grass. 12 Fruit allergens have thermolability which can also result in absent clinical manifestation.1 8 We found a very low degree of agreement and lack of statistical significance between parental reports and skin prick test results for fruit. Generally, parental reports tend to incorrectly deduce the cause of allergies.…”

“…However, parents tend to incorrectly deduce the probable food causing the allergy manifestation. 12 According to Alergologica in 2015, fruits and nuts are the most common food causing allergies in patients aged >5 years. 6 This allergy is common in children and adults.…”

“…A lower prevalence of food hypersensitivity has been reported in Southern European countries, as well as in Turkey. This may be due to genetic, cultural, or dietary factors, as well as public awareness [ 13 , 14 ]. Evidence shows that the percentage of the adverse food reactions, which are diagnosed by a double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge, is up to 15 times lower.…”

“…Various meta-analyses have estimated the prevalence of food allergies to any food in schoolchildren to be between 7% and 40% when only self-reported values are analysed, 9 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 and between 1% and 3% when studies include diagnostic tests. 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 As far as we know, besides a single study in children attending an allergy outpatient clinic, 19 the only actual population-based studies on the prevalence of food allergies carried out in Portugal were performed by our group in children 20 and adults, 21 but no studies in adolescents have been published. Thus, the objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of both self-reported and probable food allergy, as well as to analyse the clinical features, involved foods, and associated factors in a general population of Portuguese adolescents.…”
