Prevalence and Clinical Characteristics of Glaucoma in Adult Chinese: A Population-Based Study in Liwan District, Guangzhou

Abstract: POAG was more common than PACG in this southern Chinese population, with rates similar to those reported in Chinese Singaporeans. The age-adjusted rate of POAG was similar to that found in European-derived populations, but PACG was more common among Chinese, indicating that there is a large burden of glaucoma in the Chinese people.

“…An epidemiological study showed that the prevalence of primary angle-closure glaucoma was much higher in Asia, especially in China, than in other areas. [15][16][17][18] The aim of malignant glaucoma therapy is to relieve the ciliolenticular block, disrupt the misdirection of aqueous humor and to restore normal aqueous flow. 19 Drug therapy induces a posterior movement of the lens-iris diaphragm, reduces the production of aqueous humor, and dehydrates the vitreous volume.…”

“…However, as the proportion of angle-closure glaucoma to open-angle glaucoma in the present study was equal to or lower than in other investigations, it may only serve to strengthen that finding. [22][23][24][25][26][27][28] Another limitation of the study is that gonioscopy was performed only for all study participants with glaucoma and all glaucoma suspects. However, as some of the glaucoma suspects were discovered as such first at the occasion of the assessment of the optic disc photographs, which took later than the clinical examination, gonioscopy was not performed for all glaucoma suspects.…”

“…Additionally, those with more severe forms of angle closure were not included in this study. 12 Including more severe forms of angle closure such as primary angle closure and PACG subjects should increase the sensitivity, specificity, and overall utility of the tools being tested, if causing any change. Lastly SPAC was developed in a Japanese cohort but used in a Chinese population in this study.…”

“…12 For this study, a consecutive series of individuals over 50 years of age who had no evidence of angle closure on gonioscopy was selected under a protocol similar to that used in the ZAP trial. Of 90 participants enrolled from the Liwan Eye Study, 72 open-angle participants for whom complete data were recorded were selected to serve as controls.…”
