Prevalence and Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus Cultured From Raw Milk Taken From Dairy Cows With Mastitis in Beijing, China

Abstract: The colonization of dairy herds and subsequent contamination of raw milk by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), especially those expressing a multi-drug resistance (MDR), biofilm and toxins producing ability, remains an important issue for both the dairy producer and public health. In this study, we investigated the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and genetic diversity of S. aureus in raw milk taken from 2 dairy farms in Beijing, China. Ninety (46.2%, 90/195) samples were positive for S. aureus… Show more

“…In consistent with the previous reports, all ST398 isolates in this study expressed at least one fibronectin-binding protein, while some of the isolates expressed both FnBPA and FnBPB. A previous study showed that five out of the six ST398 strains isolated from raw milk of dairy cows with mastitis were positive of both fnbpA and fnbpB , while the other one isolate only carried fnbpA [23]. However, an MRSA ST398 strain from urinary tract infection in a child only carried fnbpB [24].…”

“…Similarly, multiresistant strains of CC97 were isolated from human patients in Saudi Arabia (Monecke et al, 2012) and in bovine in Spain (Gómez-Sanz et al, 2010). In contrast, non-multiresistant isolates of CC97 were obtained from dairy milk in China (Wang et al, 2018). We observed differences between the antibiotic susceptibility patterns and the carriage of antibiotic resistance genes in CC97 isolates obtained in this study.…”

“…Similar results have been reported previously from Malaysia, although the prevalence among these studies varies (Othman and Bahaman, 2005;Murugaiyah et al, 2014;Ahamed et al, 2016). High prevalence trend of S. aureus in association of subclinical mastitis has been reported elsewhere in France, China, and Ethiopia (Birhanu et al, 2017;Poutrel et al, 2018;Wang et al, 2018). Is one of the main pathogens for contagious mastitis, and it is believed to be transmitted during milking (Anderson et al, 2012).…”
