Prevalence and Characteristics of Suicide Ideation and Attempts Among Active Military and Veteran Participants in a National Health Survey

Abstract: The relationships between military service and suicide are not clear, and comparatively little is known about the characteristics and correlates of suicide ideation and attempts among those with history of military service. We used data from a national health survey to estimate the prevalence and correlates of suicidal behaviors among veterans and service members in 2 states. “…We predicted that there would be more similarities than differences across risk factors, particularly for mental health diagnoses, which are stable predictor of suicide across studies (Bossarte et al, 2012;Bush et al, 2013;Ilgen et al, 2012;LeardMann et al, 2013;Luxton et al, 2013;Nock et al, 2013;Skopp et al, 2012). However, gender differences in suicide risk factors are not well understood.…”

“…For example, "a study of suicide among older male veterans in the general population and retrospective studies of veterans from previous conflicts failed to identify general increases in risk" [7]. Veterans often have multiple mental health afflictions, thus when measuring what kind of symptoms a veteran has; clinicians must administer multiple types of tests.…”

“…The variation in rates is likely due, in part, to variability in the methods used to assess suicidal behaviors [2]. Bossarte et al [34] recently examined the prevalence of suicide ideation among active military and veteran participants in a national health survey in the U.S. The prevalence of suicide ideation and attempts identified in their study were similar to published estimates of those outcomes in the U.S. general population, 3.7% and 0.5%, respectively.…”
