“…Although prevalent, potentially fatal, and often treatable, catatonia remains a “forgotten syndrome;” given the long standing historical association between catatonia and the “catatonic subtype” of schizophrenia—it may be particularly unappreciated in patients with mood disorders. The paucity of literature on speech catatonia means that catatonia is even more likely to be overlooked in patients presenting with verbal symptoms, despite the inclusion of verbigeration on most major catatonia scales, as well as recent work suggesting that verbigeration might be one of the most common presenting symptoms of catatonia in geriatric populations . The cause for this is manifold.…”
