Background: Visual impairment (VI) is a public health problem that can affect an individual’s social wellbeing. The study aims to determine the distribution and causes of vision impairment (VI) and blindness among patients at Nigerian Army Eye Centre Lagos, Nigeria. Method: An institutional cross-sectional study was conducted, and a systematic random sampling technique was used to enrol study participants from their medical records. Information about their demography, presenting visual acuity (VA), best corrected visual acuity and cause of VI and blindness, were retrieved. Result: A total of five hundred (500) medical records of patients aged from 4 to 96 years, with a mean age of 54.07 ± 21.43 years, were considered for the study. Among the participants, more than half were males (51.2%) and ≥60 years (53.0%). A large (47.2%) proportion of the patients had moderate VI at the time of presentation, followed by blindness (22.0%). The major cause of blindness was cataract, while glaucoma and refractive error were the major causes of VI. Blindness and VI were significantly associated with the type of VI before and after the provision of intervention (p < 0.05) across different age groups (children, youths, adults, elderly) with an adjusted p < 0.003 after an intervention. Conclusions: Cataracts, glaucoma and uncorrected refractive error (URE) were the major causes of VI and blindness in Lagos State. VI was more prevalent in males than females; however, there was no significant difference between the two proportions. The prevalence of VI among age groups was more significant for those 60 years and above. Early screening for the detection and management of cataract, URE and glaucoma is highly advised to reduce the burden of VI.

Background: This survey was undertaken in a rural local government area (LGA) where eye care services recently commenced, with no known previous data on blindness or visual impairment. Aim and Objectives: The aim was to generate evidence for further planning and monitoring of the on-going eye care program. The objectives included determination of the prevalence of blindness and visual impairment, causes of blindness and visual impairment, and assessment of cataract services and barriers to cataract surgery uptake. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study. A population-based rapid assessment of avoidable blindness (RAAB) was undertaken among eligible individuals, aged 50 years and above, who were residents of Saki East LGA. A three-stage cluster sampling technique with probability proportional to size was employed to recruit 1100 respondents. Field data were analysed using the RAAB 5 computer software package. Results: The age- and sex-adjusted prevalence of blindness was 1.7% (95% confidence interval: 0.1–3.3). Cataract was the commonest cause of blindness (37.8%) and severe visual impairment (56.3%), whereas refractive error was the leading cause of moderate visual impairment (68.3%). The prevalence of blindness significantly increased with age (χ 2 = 38.01, P = 0.000). Avoidable conditions were responsible for 94.6% of the blindness. Conclusion: The burden of blindness and visual impairment in the survey area is significant, with more than 90% due to avoidable causes. Cataract, glaucoma, and uncorrected refractive error were important causes needing urgent attention.

Glaucoma is a mixed group of optic neuropathies that lead to irreversible visual field loss and blindness if left untreated. It is estimated that 3.5% of the global population aged 40 to 80 years have any glaucoma, being the primary open‐angle and the primary angle‐closure glaucoma the most prevalent forms. Although the age‐standardised prevalence of blindness caused by glaucoma has decreased substantially over the last decades, population growth and ageing impose many challenges in preventing glaucoma‐related morbidities on a global level. In addition, difficulties in diagnoses and treatment, along with its chronic and irreversible nature, urge the development and implementation of innovative approaches in confronting the disease. This manuscript reviews recent literature related to the epidemiology of primary glaucomas in adults, the risk factors attributed to the development of the disease, and discuss challenges and potential solutions from a public health perspective.
