Introduction: HIV and viral hepatitis infections are major causes of chronic disease worldwide and have some similarities with regard to routes of transmission, epidemiology, front barriers faced during access of treatment, and strategies for a global public health response. The objective was to describe the HIV-1 subtypes, viral tropism and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of interleukin 28B (IL28B) from a case series of HIV/viral hepatitis coinfected patients from southern Brazil. Methods: Clinical and epidemiological data were evaluated by a review of medical records. Periodic blood draws were taken to determine the viral and host characteristics. Results: This study included 38 patients with HIV/HBV or HIV/HCV coinfection; the median age was 49 years. Thirty-seven (97.4%) were on antiretroviral therapy, 32 (84.2%) had an undetectable viral load, a median CD4 + T-cell count of 452 cells/mm 3 . HIV-1 subtyping showed 47.4 and 31.6% of patients with subtypes C and B, respectively. Analysis of viral co-receptor usage showed a predominance of the R5 variant (64.7%), with no significant difference between the subtypes. Twenty patients with HIV/HCV coinfection were eligible to receive HCV therapy with pegylated-interferon-alpha plus ribavirin, and 10/20 (50%) of them achieved sustained virological response. SNPs of IL28B were evaluated in 93.3% of patients with HIV/ HCV coinfection, and 17 (60.7%) presented the CC genotype. Conclusions: In the present case series, a higher frequency of HIV subtype C was found in coinfected patients. However such findings need to be prospectively evaluated with the inclusion of data from regional multicenter analyses.

Infection with hepatitis B or C viruses is still one of the most dreaded infectious diseases worldwide. Health education and screening, particularly among vulnerable groups, are the most cost-effective interventions that can be provided in developing countries. Facility and community-based provision, of effective strategic health education and counseling, are dependent on better understanding of the factors that may be associated with the level of knowledge on hepatitis. One of such groups is men who sleep with men (MSM) or homosexuals, who are at high risk of hepatitis infection through unprotected anal intercourse. This study was therefore aimed at assessing the knowledge of hepatitis infection among MSM in Calabar, a metropolitan city in the oil-rich Niger-Delta region of Nigeria. Cross-sectional study design was utilized. The snow-ball sampling method was used to recruit subjects, with self-administration of structured questionnaires. Questionnaire assessed awareness, causes, sources, consequence, and prevention of hepatitis infection. Knowledge scores were obtained for each subject. Chi-square was used to assess factors associated with knowledge, with p-value fixed at 0.05. Sixty-nine (69) consenting subjects were surveyed, with mean age of 22.5 ± 3.2 years, ranging from 16 to 31 years. Mean knowledge percentage score was 43.5 ± 32.0, ranging from 0% to 100%. Age group, occupation, and other sociodemographic characteristics were not significantly associated with the knowledge of hepatitis infection. There is inadequate knowledge of hepatitis infection among MSM in the study area. This inadequacy appears worse among receivers, who are even at higher risk of sexually transmitted infections compared with inserters. These findings have implications for control of viral hepatitis in sub-Saharan Africa.

Вірусні гепатити з гемоконтактним механізмом пе-редачі (гепатити В та С) і ВІЛ-інфекція залишаються однією з найбільш актуальних проблем охорони здоров'я у світі, особливо в країнах із низьким та середнім рівнем доходу. У світі зареєстровано приблизно 36,7 млн людей з ВІЛ-інфекцією, серед них -2,1 млн нових випадків захворювання у 2015 р. Найбільш уразливим регіоном залишається Африка на південь від Сахари -тут у 2015 р. проживало 25,6 млн людей з ВІЛ. На цей регіон припадає також майже дві третини загальної кількості нових випадків ВІЛ-інфекції у світі. Високими є показни-ки смертності від цього захворювання: більше 35 млн осіб загалом та приблизно 1,1 млн осіб у 2015 р. по-мерли від причин, пов'язаних з ВІЛ. За період з 2000 по 2015 рр. кількість нових випадків ВІЛ-інфекції зменши-лася на 35 %, а рівень смертності, пов'язаної зі СНІДом, знизився на 28 %, тобто було врятовано близько 8 млн людських життів у результаті міжнародних зусиль, спря-мованих на протидію ВІЛ/СНІДу [1].Згідно з експертними оцінками, на сьогодні лише 60 % людей з ВІЛ знають про свій статус, а решта 40 % (14 млн) людей потребують отримання доступу до послуг ВІЛ-тестування [1].У 2014 р. стратегія UNAIDS щодо прискорення за-ходів у відповідь на ВІЛ/СНІД запропонувала цільові показники прогресу у припиненні глобальної пандемії ВІЛ-інфекції після 2015 р.: 90-90-90 (до 2020 р.) та 95-95-90 (до 2030 р.). Це означає, якщо 90/95 % людей, що живуть з ВІЛ, будуть знати про свій ВІЛ-позитивний статус, і якщо 90/95 % людей, які знають про свій ВІЛ-позитивний статус, отримуватимуть антиретровірусну терапію (АРТ), то у 90/95 % людей, які отримують від-повідне лікування, рівень вірусного навантаження буде не визначатись, що суттєво зменшить ймовірність пе-редачі ВІЛ та подальше поширення збудника. Застосу-вання цього підходу дозволить запобігти до 2030 р. приблизно 28 млн нових випадків ВІЛ-інфекції, 21 млн смертей, обумовлених ВІЛ-інфекцією, уникнути додат-кових витрат у зв'язку з ВІЛ у розмірі 24 млрд доларів США та взагалі ліквідувати глобальну пандемію ВІЛ-інфекції [2].
