Introduction: The term ‘unintended pregnancy’ refers to a pregnancy that occurred when no children were desired or occurred earlier than desired. Unintended births account for one out of every three births in Ethiopia, and they are the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. During the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, this could be useful. COVID-19 has a significant impact on maternal health care utilization, including family planning services. As a result, this study aimed to assess unintended pregnancy and associated factors in Ethiopia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Gedeo zone, Ethiopia, from April 1 to May 30, 2021. A simple random sampling technique was utilized to get 383 pregnant women from their respective kebeles. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data during a face-to-face interview. The data were coded, cleaned, and entered into Epidemiological Data Version 3.1 before being exported to the Statistical Package for Social Science Version 23.0 for analysis. A bivariate and multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify statistically significant associations between dependent and independent variables. The odds ratio, with a 95% confidence interval and a P value of 0.05%, was considered statistically significant. Result: A total of 383 pregnant women participated in the study, giving a response rate of 90.8%. During the COVID-19 pandemic, 140 (36.6%) participants stated that their current pregnancy was unintended. Unintended pregnancy was significantly associated with respondents’ age (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 5.214 (1.449–18.762)), primary decision maker for family planning services (AOR = 9.510 (5.057–17.887)), and fear of COVID-19 to visit a health care facility (AOR = 7.061 (2.665–18.710)). Conclusion: During the COVID-19 era, more than one-third of women had unintended pregnancies. Unintended pregnancy was significantly associated with respondents’ age, autonomy to use contraceptive methods, and fear of COVID-19, which required them to attend a health care institution.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess the prevalence of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues and associated factors among female night school students in the Amhara Region, Ethiopia.DesignInstitution-based cross-sectional study.Setting16 night schools were selected from 4 zones in the Amhara Region. The data were collected between 1 January and 28 February 2019.Participants1428 female night school students aged 15–24 years.OutcomesPrevalence of SRH issues, defined as those who had experienced at least one SRH issue during their lifetime (including sexual violence, sexually transmitted diseases, teenage pregnancy, unwanted pregnancy, early marriage and abortion). Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used in the analysis.ResultsThe prevalence of SRH issues was 32.7% (95% CI 29.5% to 35.9%). Having secondary education (adjusted (OR) AOR = 1.49, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.86), being single in marital status (AOR = 1.33, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.74), not discussing SRH issues with their families (AOR = 2.69, 95% CI 2.13 to 3.40) and poor knowledge of SRH services (AOR = 2.63, 95% CI 2.08 to 3.32) were significantly associated with SRH issues.ConclusionThe lifetime prevalence of SRH issues among female night school students was high. Being single, having a secondary education, not discussing SRH issues with family, and having a poor understanding of SRH services were associated with SRH issues. Qualitative studies should be conducted to explore students’ feelings and intentions about SRH issues.

Introduction:Pregnancies can be either planned or unplanned. Unplanned pregnancies are a major public health issue globally causing poor maternal and foetal outcomes. Addressing this problem would improve the well-being of antenatal mothers and their children. Family planning is an important step to minimise the burden of unplanned pregnancies.Objective: To determine the prevalence of unplanned pregnancies and their family planning preferences in the Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat Division. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted in three randomly selected antenatal clinics (Borella, Kirula and Wellawatte) which covered District 3, District 4 and District 5 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas of Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat Division of the Colombo Municipal Council. A total of 425 antenatal mothers who attended these antenatal clinics, fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study using a consecutive sampling method. Data collection was done by the principal investigator using interviewer-administered questionnaires. Data on prevalence and family planning preferences following current pregnancy were obtained and analysed. The prevalence of unplanned pregnancies was calculated based on responses given to questions on the timing and decision-making of the current pregnancy. Family planning practices and preferences were calculated as percentages. Results:The total sample size of 425 included a ten percent nonresponse rate. The age distribution was between 15 to 44 years. The age group of 22 to 34 years included 83.2% of the total study population. There were 37.2% Sinhalese, 33.9% Moors and 28.9% Tamils in the study sample. The prevalence of unplanned pregnancies was 32.7%.Thirty-three percent of antenatal mothers had used some form of contraceptive method in the past and most of them had used condoms and depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), closely followed by combine oral contraceptive pills, implants and intrauterine devices. Side effects were the major reason for not using a method in the past among nonusers. Around 60% have decided to use a contraceptive method following the current pregnancy and the majority have decided to use their chosen method for two to five years. Conclusions:According to the study, one-third of the pregnancies at antenatal clinics in the Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat Division were unplanned pregnancies. One-third of the mothers had used a contraceptive method in the past and the main reason was to space their pregnancies. More than half of the participants were planning to use a contraceptive method following the current pregnancy and many had chosen depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA).
