Prevalence and Associated Factors of Pinguecula in a Rural Population in Shanghai, Eastern China

Abstract: The prevalence of pinguecula was 75.57% in this Chinese population aged ≥ 50 years from a coastal rural area of Shanghai, Eastern China, which was higher than the majority of previous findings. Age and working outdoors were independent risk factors for pinguecula.

“…Participants who have outer occupational activity were also found to have a higher prevalence. These results are supporting the previous studies which supported the association between UV exposure and pinguecula formation [9][10][11][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…In agreement with previous studies, we thought that the reason for decreased pinguecula prevalence after 6 th decade is due to possible progression of pinguecula to pterygium. Rural residence has been shown to be strongly associated with the development of pinguecula [11,16], since residents living in rural areas mainly undertake outdoor occupational activities, meaning far more sunlight exposure. UV radiation cause ocular surface irregularities by increasing the level of p53, proinflamatuar cytokines and matrix metalloproteinase [17].…”

“…It is believed that pinguecula, fibro-fatty lesion of the conjunctiva, is also connected with UVR exposure, however, the correlation is weaker than in the case of pterygium. A study on Chinese population (959 people) [20] and Indian population (7774 people) [21] stated that working outside and a bigger exposure to sunlight during lifetime were risk factors of pinguecula.…”

“…This noncancerous tissue commonly grows from the nasal and is in a wing-shaped [2]. In addition, pinguecula, another eye disorder, is a benign thin layer of fleshy tissue that appears as a yellow spot that grows on the conjunctiva [3]. However, these tissues do not grow towards the cornea region in contrast to the pterygium.…”
