“…Previous treatment with different types of antibacterial agents, including 3GCs and carbapenems, and visitation to hospitals, are factors that facilitate colonization of individuals by ABR salmonellae (Lugito and Cucunawangsi, 2017;Whistler et al, 2018;Adikwu et al, 2018). Animals are also important reservoirs of 3GC-and carbapenemresistant organisms (Crump and Heyderman, 2015;Whistler et al, 2018), and reports showed that these organisms are haboured by livestock in Nigeria (Jajere et al, 2015;Ejikeugwu et al, 2017;Ojo et al, 2018;. Ankpa is a heavily-populated cosmopolitan agrarian town located in Kogi State North-central, Nigeria.…”

“…Production systems that cause continuous exposure to salmonella are usually intensive [ 42 , 43 ] but in more extensive systems the animals may be exposed to environmental bacteria, for example where they are gathered at night or in the milking kraal. The prevalence of salmonella isolated from mesenteric lymph nodes from healthy cattle slaughtered in an abattoir in north-east Nigeria was 61% [ 44 ], although the authors remark that this was probably an over-estimation because of the stress animals had been subjected to before being culled. Nevertheless, salmonella can be expected to circulate in smallholder farming systems in Africa, which the current results support, and measures to prevent exposure of the animals to salmonella from other herds and/or the environment would be expected to reduce the prevalence.…”

“…In addition, there is insufficient and neglected participation of concern policy makers in the control of environmental resources in the developing countries [28]. Furthermore, multi-drug resistant Salmonella has been documented from different food animals slaughtered for human consumption at abattoir [29]. This study aimed at determining the isolation rate and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Salmonella species from cattle and small ruminants slaughtered for human consumption at the two major abattoirs in Ilorin, Nigeria.…”
