Background and aims: Staphylococcus aureus, an important pathogen in bone diseases, is a highly multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterium. This study aimed to investigate the antibiotic resistance among S. aureus isolated from patients on admission in an orthopaedic hospital. Methods: In this cross-sectional research, 140 samples comprising urine samples, wound swabs, and nasal swabs were collected from 49 patients on admission. Samples were cultured and screened for S. aureus following standard procedures. Using the agar-disk diffusion method, the isolates were subjected to antibiotics susceptibility tests. Results: S. aureus were isolated from 26 (18.6%) samples, and wound swabs were found to have the highest number of the S. aureus isolates with 12 (46.2%). Among the 26 S. aureus isolated, 25 (96.2%) isolates were resistant to at least four or more of the tested antibiotics. There were 23 (88.5%) MDR isolates, while there were only 2 (7.6%) extensively drug resistant ones. The number of methicillin-resistant S. aureus were 17 (65.4% of the isolates), while the number of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus were 9 (34.6% of the isolates). A total of 22 (84.6%) isolates had multi-antibiotic resistance (MAR) index greater than 0.2. Inducible clindamycin resistance of 2 (7.6%) was observed. Conclusion: This study showed that the S. aureus isolated from the patients were resistant to multiple antibiotics. Regular surveillance of antibiotic resistance is of utmost importance, since it facilitates the design or development of the treatment regimens that could check the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Introduction Superbugs are pathogenic micro-organism and especially a bacterium that has developed resistance to the medications normally used against it. As the superbug family increases, the need for appropriate diagnostic, treatment, prevention and control strategies cannot be over emphasized. Therefore, this work determined the distribution of superbug bacteria among patients on prolonged hospital admissions in three tertiary hospitals of Kano state, Nigeria. Methods A descriptive cross sectional study was undertaken among 401 patients from medical, surgery, orthopedic and burn centre wards in a three tertiary hospitals in Kano state. A sample collected comprises wound/pus, urine, urine catheter and nasal intubation and were analysed using standard microbiological methods for Acinetobacter spp and other related nosocomial bacterial pathogens. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was done using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Results One hundred and thirty eight (138) isolates were recovered, from the studied participants. More than 80% of the nosocomial infections (NIs) were caused by Gram-negative bacteria, predominantly Escherichia coli, Klebseilla spp, Proteus spp, Pseudomona spp and Acinetobacter spp. In-vitro antibiotic susceptibility test revealed that acinetobacter were 100% resistant to amoxicillin, co-trimoxazole, perfloxacin and imipenem. Conclusion Superbugs (Acinetobacter species) significantly contributed to delayed hospital admissions through observed 100% resistance to used antibiotics. The healthcare managers of these hospitals and the ministry of health need to take measures against this resistant bacteria ( Acinetobacter spp) especially on prescribing antibiotics that showed 100% resistant from these studied hospitals.

This work aimed at determining the antibacterial activity of ethanolic crude extracts of leaves and fruits of Capsicum annum against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli; isolated from pus and stools samples of patients in Ruhengeri Referral hospital, Rwanda. Fruits and leaves of C. annum samples were collected from Sina Gerard enterprise in Rulindo District in July, 2012. Plant samples were shade dried for 10 days, and then standard method was used for extraction using 96% ethanol as a solvent. Antibacterial activities of ethanolic crude extracts of fruits and leaves of C. annum were determined against E. coli and S. aureus using standard disc diffusion method. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and Minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were also determined. Results showed that crude extracts of leaves and fruits of C. annum had antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and E. coli. The mean diameter of inhibition zones and standard deviation of fruits crude extract against S. aureus and E. coli ranged from 8.17± 0.15 to 11.0 ± 0.89 mm, and 14.0 ± 0.25 to 17.9 ± 0.35 mm; respectively, while those of leaves crude extract ranged from 9.7 ± 0.26 to 14.7± 0.25mm, and 8.7± 0.35 to 11.1 ± 0.38 mm; respectively, at increasing extract concentration from 50 to 200 mg/ ml. MIC of fruits ethanolic crude extract against E. coli and S. aureus was 25 and 12.5mg /ml; respectively, while MBC was found to be 50 and 25mg/ ml, respectively. However, MIC of leaves ethanolic crude extract against E. coli and S. aureus were 50 and 12.5mg/ ml respectively, while MBC was found to be 100 and 50 mg/ ml, respectively. We concluded from this study that, ethanolic crude extract of both fruits and leaves of C. annum collected from Rwanda had antibacterial potential against tested bacteria, thus could be used as sources of new drugs.
