Prevalence and age of onset of Parkinson's disease in Cardiff: a community based cross sectional study and meta-analysis

Abstract: The data suggest that there are no major geographical variations in the prevalence of PD in the UK and that the age adjusted prevalence rate has remained relatively stable over the past 40 years. Although PD risk is far greater in older subjects, patients with young onset are not that uncommon in the community, and health and social care provision should reflect their needs.

“…9 However, evidence supporting an influence of age on PD phenotype at its onset is lacking and conflicting. [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Previous studies have poorly assessed the full spectrum of motor and nonmotor symptoms and they have not evaluated the relationship between PD phenotype and imaging and nonimaging biomarkers. The Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) is an ongoing, international, multicenter, prospective study designed to discover and validate biomarkers of disease progression in newly diagnosed, drug-naive patients with PD.…”

“…Although the risk to get PD is much higher for older individuals (average age at onset is 68 years), patients with young onset are also reported [216,225]. PD is nowadays subdivided in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (having unknown cause) and Parkinson plus syndromes [215].…”

“…Wiadomo jednak, że mechanizm neurodegeneracji może zostać uruchomiony przez czynniki zarówno genetyczne, jak i środo-wiskowe, a proces obumierania komórek nerwowych może przebiegać na drodze takich mechanizmów jak: przyśpieszone starzenie, oddziaływanie czynników toksycznych, stres oksydacyjny, przewlekły proces zapalny i zaburzenia metabolizmu białek [4].…”
