Pretreatment of Hevea Latex by Sorbitol: Improving the Efficacy of Silica Dispersion by a Biomimetic Approach

Abstract: Incorporating a high amount of silica in cis-1,4polyisoprene (CPI) by conventional dry mixing is a Herculean task. A biomimicking approach is adopted herein through incorporation of a bio-based sugar alcohol (sorbitol) into the CPI latex, which creates protein−carbohydrate interactions in the latex called protein−sugar conjugates. These treatments unveiled a significant improvement in key properties of the CPI vulcanizates, like >15% reduction in tan δ at a high temperature, besides better dispersion as eviden… Show more

“…Biopolymers such as natural rubber (NR) are extensively utilized in vehicle tires due to their unique high elasticity, outstanding resilience, and insulation properties. However, the presence of several methyl groups, unstable CC bonds, and active allyl hydrogens in the NR molecular chain limits its applicability due to thermo-oxidative aging, thereby dramatically shortening the service life of NR products (e.g., tires). External stimuli, including light, heat, ozone, and oxygen, could significantly deteriorate the physical or chemical properties of NR products. Thus, enhancing the NR’s oxidative aging resistance is of primary importance for physical or chemical property enhancement and for economic reasons.…”
