Presurgical Localization of Breast Abnormalities: An Overview and Analysis of 202 Cases

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze cases undergoing imaging guided localization prior to surgical excisional biopsy of abnormalities in the breast and to describe the methodology utilized to perform such presurgical localization procedures. Presurgical localization of non palpable breast abnormalities is a simple, safe and effective procedure; it is now used more selectively for this indication due to availability of minimally invasive percutaneous biopsy procedures that can be performed under ultrasound… Show more

“…Upon localization of a mass, the next step is to decide whether it is necessary to continue the workup sequence with the other breast imaging modalities or biopsy, for example, fine-needle aspiration. Microcalcifications have the potential to be malignant, whereas macrocalcifications are likely caused by aging or inflammatory reactions (6,8,(10)(11)(12).…”

“…Surgical excision may be more beneficial than stereotactic-guided percutaneous biopsy in several circumstances, as the entire lesion is removed and additional unexpected abnormal findings may be detected which may be a valuable tool in morphology and histopathology correlation. 15,16,17 The purpose of this study was to compare the mammographic features of suspicious calcifications between DCIS and benign breast disease.…”

“…Since the 1970s wire-guided localisation (WGL) has been the standard of care in many countries, including the UK. Although effective at providing pre-operative localisation with failure rates of between 1 and 7% [ 3 ] the technique has several disadvantages. The need for wire placement on the same day as surgery can negatively impact existing resources and interfere with breast one-stop clinics, theatre timing and utilisation, particularly if last minute problems are encountered.…”
