Prestressed polymeric matrix composites: Longevity aspects

Abstract: Elastically prestressed polymeric matrix composites (EPPMCs) are produced by stretching fibers (e.g., glass) within the composite during matrix curing. The resulting prestress can enhance mechanical performance, without increasing section dimensions or weight. Viscoelastically prestressed polymeric matrix composites (VPPMCs) can provide similar benefits, these being produced by subjecting polymeric fibers (e.g., nylon 6,6) to a creep load, which is released prior to molding. Although VPPMCs offer simplified pr… Show more

“…Therefore, the TSSP shares the same basis as the TTSP, i.e., the free volume theory. A successful transformation of the log α T (temperature shift factor) values from creep 15 and stress relaxation have been reported in relation to predicting the long‐term behavior of recovery in polyamide 6,6 fiber and the (associated) impact toughness in polyamide fiber‐based VPPMCs . Therefore, in addition to creep, the applicability of α σ to recovery behavior was also evaluated in the current work.…”

“…Production of the VPPMC strips followed previously described procedures [6,8,9], the main points being outlined here. A continuous multifilament yarn of nylon 6,6 fibres, similar to material previously studied (140 filaments, 26 mm filament diameter, 94 tex), was used.…”

“…1. The cross-sectional spatial density of prestressing fibres in VPPMC strips can be non-uniform due to open casting [6,8,9]; thus a thin strip could undergo bending, to give a mid-span deflection, δ, in Fig. 1.…”
