Prestorage Application of Oxalic Acid to Alleviate Chilling Injury in Mango Fruit

Abstract: Effects of postharvest oxalic acid (OA) application on chilling injury (CI) in harvested mango fruit (Mangifera indica L.) were investigated using ‘Tommy Atkins’ fruit from Florida and ‘Zill’ fruit from Panzhihua. The OA was applied to harvested fruit as a 5 or 10 mm drench for 10 or 15 minutes at 25 °C. ‘Tommy Atkins’ fruit typically develop external CI symptoms while ‘Zill’ develops internal symptoms. Development of CI symptoms was significantly reduced i… Show more

“…Phakawatmongkol et al (2004) reported that cultivars such as 'Nam Dok Mai' and 'Okrong' were more and least susceptible to CI, respectively. The CI symptoms include sunken lesions, shriveling, pitting, discoloration of the peel, susceptibility to decay, and uneven ripening (Li et al, 2015). Severe CI symptoms have been reported in fruit at ambient temperature during shelf-life after cold storage (Ntsoane et al, 2019b).…”

“…The antioxidant activity of trolox, a water-soluble homologue of vitamin E, is used to calculate TEAC [ 66 ]. DHAR and GR are enzymes that play key functions in the antioxidant defence system of cells [ 40 , 67 ]. DHAR catalyses the conversion of dehydroascorbate to ascorbate, a key antioxidant in the cell.…”

“…ATPase is an enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of ATP, which is the process of releasing energy by breaking the links between the phosphate groups in the molecule. There are several varieties of ATPase enzymes, including Na + /K + ATPase, H + ATPase, and Ca 2+ ATPase, each with a distinct purpose in the cell [ 67 ].…”

“…In addition, the ATP, ADP, and AMP contents were determined using the method of Li et al An Agilent 1260 high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a reversed-phase Spherisorb C-18 analytical column and a UV detector was used. Energy charge (EC) was calculated according to the formula, …”
