Pressure stabilized straw tube modules for the PANDA Forward Tracker

Abstract: The design of straw tube detector modules developed for the PANDA Forward Tracker is presented. One module consists of 32 straws with 10 mm diameter, arranged in two staggered layers, and has a very low material budget of only 8.8•10 −4 X 0. The overpressure of the working gas mixture of 1 bar makes the module self-supporting and enables the use of lightweight and compact support frames. Detection planes in the Forward Tracker consist of modules mounted closely, without gaps, next to each other on a support fr… Show more

“…The Forward Detector has full azimuthal coverage for polar angles in the range 0.5 • to 7 • . It consists of two Straw Tracking Stations (STS1, STS2), which are based on instrumentation developed for PANDA [37,38], and a Forward Resistive Plate Chamber (FRPC) detector for Timeof-Flight (ToF) measurements. These detectors are located 3.1 m, 4.6 m and 7.5 m downstream of the target, respectively.…”

“…Already the upgrades of the GSI accelerators allow for extensive testing of FAIR components and also provide beam times for tests of novel FAIR instrumentation and thereby enabling an attractive intermediate research program in FAIR phase 0. For example, the upgrade to higher intensities from the SIS18 benefits the hadronic-matter experimental program of HADES (High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer) [18] which will already employ instrumentation of FAIR experiments, CBM and PANDA, in 2020 [19][20][21].…”

“…For momentum analysis of charged reaction products in magnetic field in these two spectrometers, the central Straw Tube Tracker [2] and the Forward Tracker (FT) [3] are used, respectively. The trackers are based on 10 mm in diameter straw tube detectors made of 27 µm thick aluminised-Mylar film and containing a 20 µm diameter gold-plated tungsten anode wire [4]. The straws are filled with Ar:CO 2 (90:10) gas mixture at an overpressure of 1 bar.…”
