Pressure-Sensitive Paint: Effect of Substrate

Abstract: There are numerous ways in which pressure-sensitive paint can be applied to a surface. The choice of substrate and application method can greatly affect the results obtained. The current study examines the different methods of applying pressure-sensitive paint to a surface. One polymer-based and two porous substrates (anodized aluminum and thin-layer chromatography plates) are investigated and compared for luminescent output, pressure sensitivity, temperature sensitivity and photodegradation. Two luminophores … Show more

“…A total of six samples were placed in the calibration chamber: the PtTFPP-polymer, PtTFPP-AA-PSP, and PtTFPP-TLC, Ru(dpp) 3 -polymer, Ru(dpp) 3 -AA-PSP, and Ru(dpp) 3 -TLC. According to the findings of Quinn et al 18 the polymer based paints gave the strongest signal followed by the TLC plate. The AA-PSP signal was the lowest.…”

“…18 Generally, the thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and anodized aluminium seem to be the most frequently used porous binder for PSP applications in high speed flows. The micropores on the porous binder absorb the luminophore molecules via the internal-molecule force.…”

“…The temperature sensitivity of the current AA-PSP formulation is found to be approximately -0.64% per degree. 39 The temperature rise during the test duration will cause considerable error if it is uncorrected. However, in the current setup in-situ calibration was applied to convert the AA-PSP images to pressure maps.…”

“…The temperature sensitivity of the present AA-PSP substrate has been measured by Quinn et al 46 and a -0.64%/ dimensional compression/expansion ramp and three dimensional wing-body model. 33,34 The standard deviation of the uncorrected AA-PSP measurement and the Kulite transducer reading on twodimensional model is about 2.6%.…”
