Pressure regulation with kick attenuation in a managed pressure drilling system

Abstract: This paper presents a switched control scheme for regulation of the annular pressure in a well during drilling. The main feature is automatic kick attenuation while drilling reservoir sections. A simple mathematical model is presented that captures the dominant phenomena of the drilling system and forms the basis for observer and control design. A switched pressure control algorithm for feedback control of the choke valve opening and the back-pressure pump is proposed, and asymptotic stability properties are e… Show more

“…In part 2 of this paper, the appropriate model is presented for the estimated observer, and in part 3 the base on the presented model, the comparison estimator and the observer are obtained. Finally, in part 4, the estimator in the MATLAB environment and Simulink is applied to utilize the data in [4], and [5] is obtained from a well located in the Grane field in the North Sea.…”

“…In this part, the simulation of the obtained estimator in part 2 is performed based on the data in [4] and [5] that is obtained from a real wellbore in the MATLAB environment and the Simulink. The estimated results and the variables are compared with the real data.…”

“…PID control in the drilling process has been studied in Godhavn (2009), and Siahaan et al (2014). Based on the developed drilling model, the model-based control for drilling operation has been studied in Nygaard et al (2007), Carlsen et al (2008), Breyholtz et al (2009), Zhou et al (2009), , Nygaard (2011), Kaasa et al (2013). However, this method depends on the accuracy of the model and the complexity is increased by the fact that a large set of parameters in such models are uncertain or unknown and possibly changing.…”

“…Moreover, its measurement is sometimes not available when the circulation is low or during pipe connection. Therefore, considering the unreliable and partial unavailability of the BHP measurement, accurate estimation is a challenging problem (Zhou et al [2008a], Paasche et al [2011], Stamnes et al [2008], Zhou et al [2009Zhou et al [ , 2008b, Nygaard et al [2007c]).…”

“…For example, the use of low order models for estimation and control of the BHP can be founded in Nygaard et al [2007a,b]. More recently, a third-order managed pressure drilling (MPD) model developed by Kaasa [2007] is widely used to estimate the BHP, see Zhou et al [2008a], Paasche et al [2011], Stamnes et al [2008, Zhou et al [2009Zhou et al [ , 2008b, . In Zhou et al [2008a], Stamnes et al [2008 a nonlinear model-based adaptive observer to estimate the BHP with estimation of other parameters is employed.…”
