Pressure Effects on the Optical Properties of NdVO4

Abstract: We report on optical spectroscopic measurements in pure NdVO4 crystals at pressures up to 12 GPa. The influence of pressure on the fundamental absorption band gap and Nd3+ absorption bands has been correlated with structural changes in the crystal. The experiments indicate that a phase transition takes place between 4.7 and 5.4 GPa. We have also determined the pressure dependence of the band-gap and discussed the behavior of the Nd3+ absorption lines under compression. Important changes in the optical properti… Show more

“…Usually ten or eleven Raman modes are measured [62,63,64] being one Eg mode difficult to be detected because of it has a weak Raman scattering cross-section and overlaps with one of the A1g modes. The twelve modes have been only measured in NdVO4 [23]. In order to illustrate changes induced by pressure in the Raman spectrum we show results measured in TbVO4 [59].…”

“…The accurate knowledge of the electronic properties of MVO4 vanadates is crucial for the developing of their technical applications. Several studies have been carried out to characterize these properties in rare-earth vanadates; they have been carried out at ambient conditions and under high-pressure [15,23,44,115,116,117].…”

“…As a result, first-order phase transitions, involving large volume changes, have been discovered at pressures below 10 GPa (for instance, the zircon-scheelite and zirconmonazite transitions in alkaline earth vanadates [10,11]). Many of these transitions lead to interesting phenomena such as a collapse of the electronic band gap [12]. In contrast, very little effort has been dedicated to study kagome staircase orthovanadates under HP.…”

“…In another original article, Enrico Bandiello et al [8] studied the high-pressure behavior of zircon-type NdVO 4 . In particular, these authors report on optical spectroscopic measurements in pure NdVO 4 crystals at pressures up to 12 GPa.…”
