Pressure Dependence of Laser-Induced Fluorescence of Sm3+ in Al2O3—Y2O3 System Compounds

Abstract: The piezospectroscopic (PS) coefficients relating frequency shift to pressure are evaluated for Sm3+ in the Al2O3–Y2O3 system compounds, which include Al2O3, Y3Al5O12, YAlO3, Y4Al2O9, and Y2O3. The fluorescence peaks are inherently narrow for all the synthesized compounds, on the basis of the f–f transition nature of Sm3+ ion. Furthermore, the PS coefficients are ranged from −2.2 to −8.2 cm−1/GPa, which are similar to the reported value for the R1 line of ruby and suitable for the PS stress evaluation. PS stre… Show more

“…Conversely, it has been known for several decades that the optical lines of rare-earth ions in solids are sensitive to stress via the piezospectroscopic effect [31,32]. Indeed, in the elastic regime, a compressive or tensile stress modifies the interatomic distances.…”

“…Recently, trivalent samarium Sm 3þ ions activated YAlO 3 have attracted interest for pressure sensing [13], red light emission [14,15] and, in the form of nanophosphor, for fingerprint recognition technique [16]. However, still spectroscopic properties, especially fluorescence dynamics and energy transfer processes in Sm 3þ :YAP are not reported to our knowledge.…”

“…[4][5][6] Yttrium oxide doped with europium (Y 2 O 3 : Eu) is one of the main red emission phosphors used in high-efficiency cathode ray tube and field emission display. 7,8 As the demand for advanced materials such as luminophors is increasing, the development of analytical methods for the determination of dopants in luminophors is required. Several methods for determining trace amounts of Eu(III) and Sm(III) based on spectrofluorimetric techniques and luminescence mechanisms have been studied by several authors.…”
