Pressure-assisted electrokinetic injection for the stacking of biogenic amines gives enhancement factor up to 1000 in CE with UV detection

Abstract: Pressure-assisted electrokinetic injection (PAEKI) was applied for stacking of positively charged biogenic amines (BAs) to improve the sensitivity of capillary electrophoresis (CE).

“…Hybrid modes (such as pressure-assisted EK injection, PAEKI) have been described and used to improve the sensitivity of the analysis of proteins [387], antibiotics [388,389], biogenic amines [390], or inorganic contaminants [391]. Although the approach was applied to a nanofluidic device, electro-preconcentration diagrams were used to optimize molecular enrichment with low counter pressure using albumin as a model analyte, reaching preconcentration factors of 70 after only 2 min [387].…”

“…On the other hand, Yang et al. developed a method to enhance the detection sensitivity of BAs from chicken by CE–UV applying pressure‐assisted electrokinetic injection (PAEKI) [33]. CE coupled to PAEKI produced a preconcentration of 13 BAs from chicken causing a counterbalanced electroosmotic flow (EOF) under positive injection voltage (7.8 kV) and employing an external pressure in the opposite direction (−0.1 psi) with an injection time of 0.70 min.…”

In this manner, the LODs of BAs employing CE–PAEKI enhanced from 8.7–24.3 nmol/L using indirect UV detection to 0.4–4.5 nmol/L with direct UV detection compared with hydrodynamic injection, providing an enrichment factor up to 1000 [33].…”
