Preserving the Epistemic Authority of Science in World Politics

Abstract: Governments rely extensively on expertise, and arguably many of the major accomplishments over the last 50 years reflect the ideas and involvement of experts. Yet expertise in world politics is increasingly contested. This chapter looks at the role of science and expertise in the world politics, and the multiple criteria of legitimacy that frame its reception. It concludes with a discussion of how scientific legitimacy can be defended.
