Preservation of the saphenous vein during inguinal lymphadenectomy decreases morbidity in patients with carcinoma of the vulva

Abstract: Preservation of the saphenous vein during inguinal lymphadenectomy reduces both the short term and long term postoperative complications without affecting treatment outcome. The saphenous vein should be preserved routinely in patients undergoing inguinal lymphadenectomy.

“…35 Different surgical techniques have been tried to prevent LLL after groin dissection in gynecological, 36Y38 urological, 39 and skin cancers, 40 including saphenous vein preservation. 41 Although GCSs have been shown to reduce the rate of postthrombotic syndrome, 42,43 and their use after groin node dissection seems to be routine practice in some centers 44 ; their role All measurements are in milliliters. Overall lower-limb volume increased greater in the control arm than in the treatment arm (P = 0.010, ANOVA).…”

“…It is controversial whether preservation of the vena saphena magna can reduce morbidity (5,7,12,13) . Zhang et al (13) reported in a retrospective study of 83 patients that preservation of the vein reduced both short-and long-term complications.…”

“…Traditionally, the long saphenous vein is sacrificed, although recent evidence shows that its preservation may reduce the risk of postoperative lymphoedema without compromising the risk of local recurrence 22. Exposure of areolar tissue in the proximity of the femoral vessels deep to fascia lata allows access to the deep inguinal nodes.…”
