Preservation of alpha rhythm shortly after photic driving

Abstract: EEG responsiveness to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) with repetitive flashes was examined just after the pause of IPS. By omitting 5, 10, 15 and 20 flashes in the course of IPS at 10 Hz, 2 s IPS responses at the midline occipital area were compared between flash trains before (train 1) and after the pause (train 2). Amplitude, peak frequency and bandwidth (reflecting the degree of rhythmicity) of an alpha peak in the power spectrum of averaged IPS responses were each obtained every 50 ms with the power … Show more

“…A high correlation between the driving profile and the background EEG spectra may be considered evidence of the above-mentioned concept of the resonance mechanisms of the driving response (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10). This is most clearly illustrated by the maximum increase in amplitude occurring during stimulation near the peak alpha frequencies of the background EEG (3,5,35).…”

“…The digital sampling frequency was 256 Hz. The EEG was not digitized during at least 5 s after each stimulation in order to exclude a possible short post-stimulation effect (9).…”

“…The instants of stimulation were also acquired to be used as reference when applying the signal processing techniques. In order to avoid the possible short post-stimulation effect (27), the first 5 s after each stimulation were excluded from analysis.…”

“…Photic driving is widely used as an activation method in clinical practice, for example, in epilepsy, migraine, schizophrenia or depression [4][5][6]. Basic properties of the alpha rhythm during photic driving have been investigated by electroencephalographic methods [7][8][9][10].…”
