This essay delves into the utilization of a negative hermeneutical approach, focusing on gaps, tensions, and the absence of elements, to enrich our comprehension of reconciliation efforts. It posits that this method aids in discerning more and less appropriate approaches to reconciliation processes. Negative hermeneutics serves as both a technique and an ongoing journey of exploration, self‐assessment, and understanding our connection with otherness. By critically engaging with perspectives, it prompts deeper questions and fosters a heightened awareness of the limitations inherent in one's viewpoint. Drawing from examples within the ongoing “Reconciliation and Beyond” initiative of the diocese of British Columbia, specifically Bishop Logan's “Sacred Journey,” the essay illustrates how this approach holds potential. It demonstrates how a focus on negative aspects—those initially resistant to conventional academic scrutiny, like silence and materiality—offers valuable insights into critical practices and academic implications. Furthermore, the essay analyses how a hermeneutical process involving receiving, deconstructing, and recreating can introduce innovative perspectives for understanding reconciliation efforts.

Based on fieldwork observations and interviews, this article offers both a theoretical and methodological reflection on the study of the maternity among Hasidic Jewish women at the crossroads of two approaches. The first considers motherhood from a feminist phenomenological perspective, emphasizing the lived and embodied dimension of the feminine; following Butler and queer theorists, this translates into a vision of motherhood and more broadly of gender, as doing. The second propose to consider Jewishness rather than Judaism, and grasp it as a «lived discursive tradition» in the wake of Talal Asad and the lived religion approach. The preliminary results of my research illustrate the heuristic scope of this framing, highlighting the gendered character of Jewishness and especially underling how doing motherhood, gender and Jewishness is strongly intertwined and displayed through acts of daily care. It is through these gestures, among other things, that these women develop and foster their connection both with the divine and the past and the future of Jewish people.

African Biblical Studies (ABS) can be characterized both as innovative and reactionary: Innovative, because it refuses to be confined by the methodologies, ancient concerns, and principles that govern biblical studies in the 'west' (used throughout this article to refer to the majority Euro-American scholars while recognizing the presence of other groups), and instead charts a course that is more interested in making biblical interpretation relevant to present realities. Reactionary, because its driving force is partly a critique of the inadequacy of western biblical studies in providing meaningful responses to concerns that are pertinent to African communities. A genuine ABS is therefore an amalgamation of multiple interpretive methods, approaches and foci that reflect a creative engagement of the African cosmological reality and the Bible.
