Present status and future directions: Surgical endodontics

Abstract: Endodontic surgery encompasses several procedures for the treatment of teeth with a history of failed root canal treatment, such as root-end surgery, crown and root resections, surgical perforation repair and intentional replantation. Endodontic microsurgery is the evolution of the traditional apicoectomy techniques and incorporates high magnification, ultrasonic root-end preparation and root-end filling with biocompatible filling materials. Modern endodontic surgery uses the dental operating microscope, incor… Show more

“…Concomitant use of bone graft and HAM not only utilize the valuable therapeutic properties of the experimental membrane (hAM) but also enables it to function as a guided tissue regeneration membrane. GTR in endodontic surgeries has been a promising technique to enhance the ideal regeneration after endodontic surgeries and enhance the overall clinical outcome, especially in cases with cortical defects or cases with a periodontal component, such as deep probings on the tooth or a connection between concomitant periodontal and endodontic defects (Setzer & Kratchman, 2022. ; Zubizarreta‐Macho et al., 2022)Since the current study's criteria included lesions from isolated endodontic disease as well as cases with cortical defects or cases that have combined periodontal involvement, the authors decided on GTR approach.…”

“…The present study's inclusion criteria included cases with isolated endodontic disease with or without cortical defects and combined endo‐perio lesions. Since GTR techniques are only indicated in complicated cases, lesions which were of true endodontic disease might not have benefited from the occluding membrane (Setzer & Kratchman, 2022). In the present trial, individuals who were generally healthy and had no local or systemic illness were only included.…”

“…In the context of treatment endodontics, endodontic surgery encompasses various procedures for the treatment of teeth with a history of endodontic treatment failures, such as apical surgery, crown and root resections, surgical repair of perforations, and intentional replantation. Endodontic microsurgery is the evolution of traditional apicectomy techniques and incorporates high magnification, ultrasonic preparation of the root end, and filling of the root end with biocompatible materials [1]. Modern endodontic surgery uses the dental operating microscope, incorporates cone beam computed tomography for preoperative diagnosis and treatment planning, and has adopted piezoelectric approaches to osteotomy and root manipulation [2].…”

“…Endodontic retraction is a procedure performed on a tooth that has received a previous attempt at a definitive treatment that has resulted in a condition that requires further additional endodontic treatment to obtain a successful result [1,2]. The major cause of treatment failure is insufficient cleaning and inadequate filling, according to Abou-Rass, 1982 [3].…”

“…Endodontic microsurgery topic has been successfully published in different journals but only as a part of the content. [5][6][7][8] The right time has come, and now the professionals from all over the world who dedicated their professional lives to the tooth-associated microsurgery can submit their manuscripts to the narrow-specialized publication. The JEM could be visited via the website https:// jendodmicrosurg.org and its official Instagram page @j.endod.microsurg could be followed (Fig 2).…”
