“…Reports of foodstuff contamination and accidental poisoning of animals [Kohanawa et al, 1969] and humans [Masonori et al, 1972a[Masonori et al, , 1972bUrabe et al, 1979] offer dramatic evidence of the toxicity of PCB, though there is evidence that the high toxicity of PCB noted in the Yusho epidemic in Japan resulted from their contamina tion with poly chlorinated dibenzo-furans. Widely distributed and highly stable, they tend to concentrate mainly in the food chain.…”

Μελέτη Του Γίγνεσθαι Των Πολυχλωριωμένων Διφαινυλίων Στην Ατμόσφαιρα Της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου

“…Οι επιδράσεις των PCBs στον άνθρωπο έχουν προσδιοριστεί από την πραγµατοποίηση µελετών πάνω σε άτοµα τα οποία εκτέθηκαν σε υψηλές συγκεντρώσεις αυτών των ενώσεων, είτε µέσω της διατροφής τους, είτε µέσω του χώρου εργασίας τους. Οι κυριότερες επιδράσεις και συµπτώµατα που παρατηρήθηκαν κατά την δηλητηρίαση των κατοίκων του Yusho της Ιαπωνίας ήταν τα εξής: Χλωρακµή και διάφορες σχετικές δερµατικές παθήσεις, σηµάδια στα µάτια, διάφορα νευρολογικά και αναπνευστικά προβλήµατα, βλάβες στο ήπαρ, υπεργλυκεριδαιµία, προβλήµατα στην αναπαραγωγή, ενδοκρινολογικά προβλήµατα και εξασθένιση των αντισωµάτων (Kuratsune et al, 1972;Higuchi, 1976;Urabe et al, 1979;Kuratsune, 1980). Πολλά από τα παραπάνω συµπτώµατα παρατηρήθηκαν και στο ατύχηµα δηλητηρίασης από PCBs στη Ταϊβάν (Chen et al, 1981), ενώ µόνο λίγα από αυτά παρατηρήθηκαν στους εργαζόµενους των χηµικών βιοµηχανιών που παρήγαγαν PCBs (Moroni et al, 1981).…”
