Present and previous psychopathology of juvenile onset migraine: a pilot investigation by Child Behavior Checklist

Abstract: The objective was to describe the premorbid state of migraine with juvenile onset. Thirty subjects with migraine and 30 healthy subjects were enrolled in a case-control study. A structured questionnaire (Child Behavior Checklist, CBCL) was administered to the mothers and ratings were obtained for the past two age periods (0-3 and 4-6 years) and for the present state. “…As in patients with epilepsy, several studies have found an association between migraine and behavioral problems in children, with internalizing disorders (anxiety and depression) prevailing over externalizing issues [23][24][25][26][27][28]. In this regard, our data (38.70% internalizing problems; 11.30% anxiety) are comparable with those reported by Baskin and Smitherman [29] (10.20% of cases with anxiety disorders), Salvadori et al [30] (30% with internalizing problems), and Guidetti et al [23] (16% with anxiety disorders).…”

“…The combined search strategies yielded a total of 22 articles, of which nine did not meet the eligibility criteria. Of the 13 articles considered eligible, 10 (30,4149), published between 1996 and 2011, met the criteria for inclusion in the present meta-analysis (Diagram 1). All 10 studies concerned clinical population, with the exception of one (43).…”

“…[14][15][16] The comorbidity of migraine and major depression is very common, and previous studies have discussed a shared etiopathogenesis. [17][18][19] In addition, it has been shown that comorbidity of anxiety disorders is more common than major depression in children and adolescents with migraine. 20 Twin studies investigating the comorbidity of anxiety and depression with migraine mention a genetic correlation between them; 21,22 moreover, neurobiological studies have suggested impaired serotonin and dopamine pathways as common mechanisms.…”
