Present and past dynamics of Inughuit resource spaces

Abstract: Information from a collaborative GPS tracking project, Piniariarneq, involving 17 occupational hunters from Qaanaaq and Savissivik, Northwest Greenland, is used to explore the resource spaces of hunters in Avanersuaq today. By comparison with historical records from the time of the Thule Trading Station and the decades following its closure, we reveal a marked variability in resource spaces over time. “…The marked seasonal environmental variation, represented by the extent of land fast ice, impacts also the presence and accessibility of animals (see also Flora et al 2018 ). During autumn and winter, most birds will migrate southwards, which also applies to harp and hooded seals, the majority of narwhals and belugas, as well as baleen whales (Vibe 1950 ; Heide-Jørgensen et al 2003 ; Dietz et al 2008 ; Andersen et al 2009 ; CAFF 2013 ; Grønnow 2016 ).…”

“…Iceberg grounding patterns and the movement of glacial fronts have also had an effect on local sled routes, some of which are now abandoned or rarely used. In the Qaanaaq region, sled routes, such as those following the coast north into Nares Strait and south around Kap York toward Savissivik, show the same tendencies (Flora et al, ; Gearheard et al, ). Fast ice now rarely forms for extended periods along the headlands of these coastal stretches.…”

“…Clearly, in hard times, of which there have certainly been many, the Inuit have had little choice of diet and life-style. Yet, there have also been preferences and not least practical skills that have placed the social communities in particular relations to the resources, and varying over time (Flora et al 2018 ).…”
