Viral DNA can be frequently demonstrated in biopsy specimens (zur Hausen et al, 1970;Nonoyama et al, 1973;Desgranges et al, 1975;Anderson-Anvret et al, 1977, 1979Lanier et al, 1978Lanier et al, , 1981, and the carcinoma cells, but not the lymphocytes present in the tumor, contain EBV DNA and express the EBVassociated nuclear antigen (EBNA) (Wolf et al, 1973(Wolf et al, , 1975Klein et a/., 1974;Huang et al, 1974Huang et al, , 1978.
