Presence of antibodies reacting with porcine circovirus in sera of humans, mice, and cattle

Abstract: Antibodies reacting with porcine circovirus (PCV) were found in sera of humans, mice, and cattle by means of an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and an ELISA. In man, the highest seroprevalence (23.9% in IFA and 30.2% in ELISA) was found among hospitalized patients with fever of partially unclear etiology. Non-hospitalized "healthy" persons of the former German Democratic Republic showed a significantly higher number of positive sera (IFA = 20%) than blood donors from Berlin-West (IFA = 8.6%). Murine se… Show more

“…Antibodies to PCV1 have been previously demonstrated in mice [21]. Twentyfour mice were euthanised and bled before the starting of the experiment to be sure that the ICR-CD1 mice strain was free of antibodies to PCV1 and PCV2.…”

“…Porcine circovirus type 1 (PCV1) serological studies in non-porcine species have also led to controversial results. Tischer et al [21] detected antibodies to PCV1 in human beings, cattle and mice, while other workers did not find any evidence of PCV1 infection in other species (sheep, cattle, turkeys, chickens, human beings, mice, rabbits, goats and ducks) but swine [1]; PCV1 has also been demonstrated as non-pathogenic for swine [2,20]. However, at present, no association has been established between infection of both porcine circoviruses and non-porcine species.…”

“…Anelloviruses are small DNA viruses that replicate within the nuclei of infected cells, and CPE due to their presence have not been well described at present. Porcine circoviruses 1 and 2 (PCV1 and PCV2) have also been detected in cell lines including those used for vaccines, and have been traced to the use of porcine trypsin [61][62][63].…”
