Human exposure to microplastics contained in food has become a significant concern owing to the increasing accumulation of microplastics in the environment. In this paper, we summarize the presence of microplastics in food and the analytical methods used for isolation and identification of microplastics. Although a large number of studies on seafood such as fish and shellfish exist, estimating the overall human exposure to microplastics via food consumption is difficult owing to the lack of studies on other food items. Analytical methods still need to be optimized for appropriate recovery of microplastics in various food matrices, rendering a quantitative comparison of different studies challenging. In addition, microplastics could be added or removed from ingredients during processing or cooking. Thus, research on processed food is crucial to estimate the contribution of food to overall human microplastic consumption and to mitigate this exposure in the future.

Abstract. Remote sensing of litter is foreseen to be an important source of additional information relevant to scientific awareness about plastic pollution. Here, we document directional hemispherical reflectance measurements of anthropogenic and natural materials gathered along the shorelines of Chiloé Archipelago, Chile. These spectral observations were completed in a laboratory using a state-of-the-art hyperspectral HyLogger-3™ spectrometer in the thermal infrared (TIR) region; medium wave infrared (6000 nm) to long wave infrared (14 500 nm) spectrum at 25 nm intervals. The samples we investigated included sands, shells, algae, nautical ropes, Styrofoam®, gunny sacks and several fragments of plastic based items. The visible colours of these samples included shades of black, blue, brown, green, orange, white and yellow. We grouped the samples using robust statistical approaches (derivatives, peak seeking technique) and visual analyses of the derived hyperspectral reflectances. In each group we derived the average or TIR end-member signal as well as deduced diagnostic wavebands. Most of the diagnostic wavebands picked were found to be inside the atmospheric window of the TIR spectrum region. Furthermore, this laboratory reference dataset and findings might become useful in related field observations using similar thermal infrared technologies, especially in identifying anomalies resulting from environmental and meteorological perturbations. Validation and verification of proposed diagnostic wavebands would be part of a continuing effort to advance TIR remote sensing knowledge as well as assist robust detection algorithm development to potentially distinguish plastics in litter throughout the natural environments. Keberadaan mikroplastik di perairan dapat berpotensi masuk pada organisme perairan termasuk ikan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap keberadaan mikroplastik pada 12 ikan terumbu karang yang ditangkap dari perairan di tiga pulau kecil dan terluar Papua (Pulau Liki, Befondi dan Miossu) dan menganalisis perbedaan mikroplastik yang ditemukan pada insang dan saluran pencernaannya. Ikan ditangkap dengan alat pancing dan dipisahkan organ insang dan saluran pencernaannya untuk dianalisis jenis mikroplastiknya. Destruksi bahan organik dilakukan dengan menggunakan larutan H2O2 30% dan identifikasi mikroplastik dilakukan menggunakan mikroskop. Diantara jenis mikroplastik, hanya jenis fiber yang ditemukan di semua spesies ikan dengan kisaran 1,60-28,30 partikel/g berat kering. Mikroplastik yang ditemukan pada ikan yang ditangkap dari Pulau Liki lebih tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan di Pulau Befondi dan Miossu. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa ukuran ikan tidak mempengaruhi keberadaan mikroplastik pada ikan. Ikan-ikan yang ditangkap dari Pulau Liki berukuran lebih kecil jika dibandingkan dengan ikan yang ditangkap dari Pulau Befondi dan Miossu. Sebagian besar ikan yang ditemukan, mengandung fiber pada insang dan saluran pencernaan dengan ukuran yang dominan adalah >1000 µm. Kelimpahan mikroplastik jenis fiber lebih tinggi pada insang dibandingkan pada saluran pencernaan dan hal ini diduga karena perbedaan fungsi antar organ dan proses masuknya mikroplastik dari perairan ke organ-organ tersebut.
