Prescribing patterns of glucosamine in an older population: a national cohort study

Abstract: BackgroundGlucosamine is commonly prescribed as a disease modulating agent in osteoarthritis. However, the evidence to date suggests that it has a limited impact on the clinical symptoms of the disease including joint pain, radiological progression, function and quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the prescribing patterns of glucosamine from 2002–2011 in an elderly Irish national population cohort using data from the Health Service Executive Primary Care Reimbursement (HSE-PCRS) General medic… Show more

“…Hexosamines, including glucosamine (GlcN), mannosamine (ManN), galactosamine (GalN), and fructosamine (FruN), are amino sugars generated through the addition of an amine group to a hexose [1]. Among them, GlcN is a natural compound that is currently widely utilized as a dietary supplement to promote joint health, particularly in the elderly [2,3]. This dietary supplement has numerous biological and pharmacological properties, including anti-cancer, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective activities [4].…”

“…In recent years, changes in attitudes about the use of glucosamine and chondroitin in the treatment of OA have been witnessed. For example, the Irish national trend in prescribing of glucosamine increased significantly from 2002 to 2009, but then started decreasing in 2010 and 2011 under the influence of the international guidelines 44 . Before 2010, all available guidelines supported the use of glucosamine and chondroitin in symptomatic relief, and indicated that glucosamine and chondroitin may have a structure-modifying effect 45 46 47 48 .…”

“…In contrast to this results, numerous studies showed that glucose amine is commonly prescribed. Galvin et al stated that glucosamine is frequently prescribed as a disease modulating agent in osteoarthritis [13]. Huskisson informed that two different salts of glucosamine (glucosamine sulphate and glucosamine hydrochloride) are frequently used for the treatment of osteoarthritis [14].…”
