“…Similarly, literate adults would be more willing to get near corrections as reading and execution of other near vision related tasks become difficult. While some previous studies have found gender as a determinant of met presbyopic needs, 18,25,26 our study did not find that. This could be due to our study location being predominantly urban, compared to the other studies which were conducted in rural settlements, where cultural factors such as unequal access to eye care by males and females, markedly influence the gender difference in met presbyopic need.…”

“…This could be due to our study location being predominantly urban, compared to the other studies which were conducted in rural settlements, where cultural factors such as unequal access to eye care by males and females, markedly influence the gender difference in met presbyopic need. 26 The majority of those who had a near vision spectacle correction had obtained them from an eye care centre. This is a positive finding as they may have been seen by a qualified eye care professional, and may have had a comprehensive eye examination, compared to those who may have obtained their correction from a wayside vendor for example.…”

“…The spectacle coverage of 38.0% in the current study is higher than presbyopia correction coverage obtained in a previous study conducted in a rural community in Enugu, south-east of Nigeria which found presbyopic spectacle coverage of 27.8% [14]. Another study in a rural community in Abuja found a presbyopia correction coverage of 21%, [22] whereas a similar study in a rural population in Zamfara state, north-western Nigeria revealed a presbyopia correction coverage of only 0.7% [20]. A possible explanation for this discrepancy is that unlike the current study, the previous studies cited were all conducted in rural communities where it may be unlikely to find any form of eye care services.…”

“…It is possible, however, to remove hypothetical bias by a follow-up certainty question, which may result in realistic WTP [12]. While 13 studies in this scoping review were conducted in similar hypothetical conditions most did not report this shortcoming while others explicitly stated the overestimation and underestimation of WTP [28,33,34,45,50]. It is thus unclear whether these flaws were observed in any of the included studies.…”

“…Regarding sampling methods the majority of studies used probability sampling which comprised of simple random sampling [28,30,35], systematic sampling [26,27] and cluster sampling [32,33,36,45]. All are advantageous as simple random sampling is usually representative s of the general population, systematic sampling spreads the sample evenly over the population and cluster sampling is economical and feasible for larger populations [46].…”
