Prepubertal gonadectomy in cats: different surgical techniques and comparison with gonadectomy at traditional age

Abstract: Feasibility, surgical time and complications of different surgical techniques for prepubertal gonadectomy (PPG; 8-12 weeks of age) in cats were studied and compared to gonadectomy at traditional age (TAG; 6-8 months of age). Kittens were randomly assigned to PPG or TAG. Ovarian pedicle haemostasis for PPG was achieved by ligatures (n=47), vascular clips (n=50), bipolar electrocoagulation (n=50), or pedicle tie (n=50); for TAG (n=34) ligatures were used. In male cats, PPG consisted of closed castration by sperm… Show more

“…Practical and safe anaesthetic and surgical protocols are available for PPG (Aronsohn and Faggella 1993, Faggella and Aronsohn 1993, Theran 1993, Robertson and others 2003, Joyce and Yates 2011, Bushby 2013, Porters and others 2014a, b); nevertheless, there are still concerns about the effects of PPG on the behaviour and health of domestic cats (Spain and others 2002, Murray and others 2008). …”

“…There is a misconception that small cats may be harassed by other adult cats and that they may require a longer recovery time after undergoing surgery. However, the surgical procedures for young adult cats are easier, faster, and safer than the procedures used for older cats (Kustritz, 2007;Bushby & Griffin, 2011;Porters et al, 2014;Griffin et al, 2016). Indeed, probability of disease (mammary hyperplasia, ovarian cysts, and increased friability and vascularity of the uterus) in younger female cats is lower than in older female cats, and postoperative recovery is faster in younger cats than in older cats (Yates & White, 2018).…”

“…For cats, ovarian pedicle ligation may be achieved by autoligation of the ovarian artery (ie, pedicle tie). 16,46,222,226,227 When ventral abdominal or paramedian incisions are used, closure must incorporate the external rectus fascia. 228,229 When flank incisions are used, closure must incorporate the transversus abdominus and internal and external abdominal oblique muscles.…”
