Preprints in Chemistry: a Research Team's Journey**

Abstract: The benefits of publishing research papers first in preprint form are substantial and long‐lasting also in chemistry. Recounting the outcomes of our team's nearly six‐year journey through preprint publishing, we show evidence that preprinting research substantially benefits both early career and senior researchers in today's highly interdisciplinary chemical research. These findings are of general value, as shown by analyzing the case of four more research teams based in economically developed and developing c… Show more

“…A similar outcome in chemistry is likely to occur for preprints that are already cited and widely read by research chemists . For instance, the aforementioned 19.598 preprints online at ChemRxiv by September 5, 2023 had been downloaded 10,706,202 times .…”

“…[28] A small (but growing) minority of chemistry scholars, furthermore, preprint their research. [29,30] These researchers typically post the news of the new preprint in a social network allowing colleagues to learn about new advances several months before they will appear in a peer-reviewed journal.…”

“…In practice, an active minority comprised of scholars and researchers, active in both natural and social and humanistic science, has actively engaged in open science, adopting its practices and disseminating its value. Examples span from chemistry (Ciriminna and Pagliaro 2022a) and law (Caso 2020), through the earth (Cocco and Montone 2022) and life (Anagnostou et al 2015) sciences, to include virtually all disciplines.…”

“…Fourth, also in Italy, researchers owning personal academic websites were among the first to use the World Wide Web to openly share the outcomes of their research and educational work with colleagues from across the world and with their students. In other words, the delay of Italy’s researchers to embrace the shift first to OA and then to open science has been partly due also to the limited use of the Web by Italy’s researchers to autonomously disseminate their research and educational work (Ciriminna et al 2023).…”
