Preplant and Postemergence Control of Glyphosate-Resistant Giant Ragweed in Corn

Abstract: Glyphosate-resistant (GR) giant ragweed has recently been identified in southwestern Ontario and has the potential to be a significant problem for regional corn producers. Eight field trials [four with preplant (PP) and four with postemergence (POST) herbicides] were conducted from 2013 to 2014 on various Ontario farms infested with GR giant ragweed to determine the efficacy of PP and POST tank-mixes in corn. Glyphosate tank-mixed with atrazine, dicamba, dicamba/atrazine, mesotrione plus atrazine, flumetsulam,… Show more

“…PRE treatments with multiple site‐of‐action herbicides including saflufenacil plus dimethenamid‐ P with or without atrazine were effective for control of A. trifida . Previous studies also reported ≥87% control of glyphosate‐resistant A. trifida with a tank‐mixture of glyphosate, saflufenacil and dimethenamid‐ P (Belfry & Sikkema, ) and 63% control with saflufenacil plus dimethenamid‐ P (Soltani et al ., ) at 28 DAPRE. Recently, Ganie et al .…”

“…Dicamba applied alone or tank-mixed with iodosulfuron /thiencarbazone in the fall and early spring resulted in ≥ 81 and ≥ 98% control at 14 and 28 DAEST, respectively (Table 2). Belfry and Sikkema (2015) reported dicamba applied alone or tank-mixed with atrazine applied before corn planting provided > 92% control of glyphosate-resistant giant ragweed. Fall and early spring application of 2,4-D was not effective (73% control); however, tank-mixing 2,4-D with iodosulfuron /thiencarbazone provided 84 and 92% giant ragweed control at 14 and 28 DAEST, respectively (Table 2).…”

“…Atrazine has been reported to provide only 25–43% control of weedy sunflower 47 . Likewise, glyphosate tank‐mixed with atrazine provided only 27% control of GR giant ragweed, a weed species belonging to the same family 48 . Therefore, atrazine is not a suitable tank‐mix partner to control GR weedy sunflower.…”
