Preperitoneal herniorrhaphy: A historical review

Abstract: From ancient times, both the transabdominal (posterior) and the groin (anterior) approach have been used either singly or in combination in the management of inguinofemoral herniation. Development accelerated in the nineteenth century after Lister introduced antisepsis. Although Bassini and Halsted conducted their classic procedures in the preperitoneal plane, it was Cheatle, in 1920, who first performed transabdominal preperitoneal herniorrhaphy. In 1950, McEvedy described the lateral approach, which was made… Show more

“…William Stewart Halsted (1852–1922) and Edmund W. Andrews (1824–1904) modified Bassini’s repair[ 72 - 74 ]. The antiseptic concept was accelerated in the 19th century after Joseph Lister (1827–1912) introduced antisepsis[ 72 ]; additionally, Halsted was the first to use surgical gloves for aseptic technique during surgery[ 75 ]. “…Repair of inguinal hernias with mesh was first reported by Usher in 1958 [9,10]. The technique has gained widespread acceptance due to its advantages, including the fact that there is no tension, there is less pain, which facilitates more rapid recovery, and the rate of recurrence is lower, as compared to other techniques.…”

“…McEvedy described his unilateral preperitoneal technique in 195o and this became the basis for Nyhus and Condon's (196o) popular iliopubic tract repair. However, Stoppa (quoted in Read, 1989) employed the CheatleHenry exposure in the 6o's and 7o's in his remarkably successful GPRVS repair of bilateral and recurrent groin defects. His operation has been modified recently by laparoscopists (Arregui, 1993) performing total extraperitoneal prosthetic repair (TEP).…”
