Objectives: Although high-stakes interviews are critically important for residents to obtain competitive fellowships, few formalized programs targeting interviewing skills exist. Previous studies demonstrate that mock interviews increase medical students' and healthcare professionals' confidence and improve match rates, but little research has been conducted among medical residents. The objective of our study was to increase trainees' confidence entering fellowship interviews and prepare them for commonly encountered questions via a mock interview program.Methods: Emory Internal Medicine residency leaders designed a voluntary mock interview program focused on 103 residents (64% of the overall cohort) pursuing fellowship training (median 36, range 30-37/ year) from 2018 to 2020. Administrative staff scheduled eight associate program director interviewers for 75 hours of interviews for 3 years (mean 3.6 hours per interviewer per year), ensuring program feasibility. Interviewers underwent faculty development and used a standardized tool with commonly asked interview questions to conduct mock interviews. Interviewers provided feedback on verbal communication, nonverbal communication, professionalism, and, given recent shifts to virtual interviews, camera readiness. We conducted resident surveys to understand their perceptions of mock interview program experiences.Results: Ninety-nine residents pursuing fellowship (96%) enrolled. Fifty (51%) completed the survey (median 20, range 14-22/year); 46 (92%) reported that the mock interviews were helpful or increased their confidence for interview season.Conclusions: Residents perceived that this high-fidelity mock interview program successfully prepared them at a critical career juncture. This program is feasible, sustainable, adaptable, and scalable, and may be adopted to benefit trainees in any graduate medical education program.

Introduction: The Residency Match is becoming more competitive each year, and more than ever, medical students must prove themselves in the residency interview. Data from the 2018 National Residency Matching Program's Program Director Survey highlight the importance of the interview on Match performance. We developed a residency interview training program with the goal of preparing medical students for residency interviews, and we assessed the impact of the training on medical student confidence. Methods: Our residency interview training program includes (1) a short didactic session on the residency interview process, (2) an informational packet with commonly asked questions, (3) two 20-minute practice (mock) interviews, (4) 10 minutes of face-to-face feedback from interviewers, (5) a facilitated group debriefing, and (6) access to a participant's two videotaped interviews and a guided self-assessment. To evaluate the effectiveness of our program, we assessed student confidence with a pre-and postsurvey. Results: We have been running our residency interview training program since 2014. Over the last 5 years, 73 fourth-year medical students have participated. When polled after completing their first authentic residency interview, students felt they had more knowledge of the interview process, better preparation, and more confidence in their skills to interview successfully; they also believed that the program improved their interview performance. Discussion: Performance during the residency interview is the most important factor used by residency programs to rank applicants. Using our residency interview training program, medical students can improve their confidence prior to interviews.

Background: Applications to the Fellowship Match through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Specialties Matching Service (SMS) are at an all-time high. Data regarding the preparedness of medical residents who go through the interview process is limited. Objective: To assess whether the implementation of an interview curriculum could improve medical resident preparedness for and performance during fellowship interviews. Methods: All third-year internal medicine residents (N = 18) at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell (Northwell) applying to subspecialty fellowship participated in an interview curriculum that comprised a didactic session and an Objective Structured Teaching Exercise (OSTE). Participants were surveyed on preparedness before and after the curriculum and medical residents and faculty were surveyed on medical resident performance after their OSTE and after their Northwell fellowship interview. Results: Out of the total possible number of participants, 16 (89%) were included in our analysis. Pre and post-test statistical differences in survey responses were evaluated using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Medical resident preparedness and resident perceived performance increased in all measured categories, including overall preparedness ( P = .001) and overall interview skills ( P = .008). No significant change in faculty-rated resident performance was observed. Conclusion: The development and institution of a formal interview curriculum improved medical resident preparedness and perceived performance. However, this significant improvement seen between medical resident pre and post surveys did not translate to improvement between faculty pre and post surveys. Future studies should look at fellowship match rates to objectively assess the impact of the curriculum.
