Preparing historical maps for presentation in a Geoportal

Abstract: This paper discusses the challenges to a wider access to archival cartographic materials. The aim of the study is to present and evaluate the preparation of historical maps for presentation in geoportals. The authors use the example of two maps from the early twentieth century, without information on the spatial relations, to trace the course of their processing into a form that allows them to be published in spatial data structures. The descriptions of subsequent stages include theoretical and practical aspec… Show more

“…It was easiest to identify such places in the city centre, where most of the buildings have survived to this day. Problems occurred with the locations of these points on the former periphery of the city [37], which have undergone the greatest spatial transformation over the last few decades. The next stage of the work was the interpretation and screen digitisation of the contour drawing.…”

“…In the case of GIS tools, this stage has to be preceded by the spatial alignment (georeferencing) of archival cartographic materials. Calibration of the historical map is a vast subject, which has already been discussed at length in the literature [6,18,[57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68].…”

“…In order to perform adequate graphical conversion, the appropriate kind of geometric correction must be selected. For this, available transformation types were tested and the one generating the fewest errors and distortions was selected [21]. After testing, the 'adjust' transformation was performed.…”
