“…Findings from this study resonate with earlier research and reveal the influence of previous travel experience (also described by Luce et al, 2007;Thorne, 1997;and Wehbi, 2009); altruism; a fascination with other cultures; and personal benefits (Bosworth et al, 2006;Callister & Cox, 2006;Cook, 2012;Sarfaty & Arnold, 2005;Walsh & DeJoseph, 2003;Wehbi, 2009). Similar motivations for medical students were cited by Sarfaty and Arnold (2005). In addition, Luce, Stewart, and Davison (2007) examined physician assistant students' attitudes to international placements (n ¼ 482) and found that 59.8% of students surveyed reported that prior experiences abroad, including work experience and volunteer projects, to be motivating factors to seek out further international experiences.…”

“…Emergency medicine is considered a specialty in approximately half the countries that responded, representing significant international recognition of the specialty. Bilateral exchanges for training personnel in clinical, administrative and research skills are critical to the development of international emergency health services [4,12,15,21,22]. Molyneux and Robertson have proposed that professional emergency medicine organisations in more heavily resourced nations provide advocacy, education and personnel to less advantaged countries [23].…”
