An array of perfectly alternating polycarbonate‐polydimethylsiloxane (PC‐PDMS) multiblock copolymers possessing systematic variations in block molecular weights were successfully produced by coupling preformed PC and PDMS telechelic oligomers using hydrosilylation. Based on gel permeation chromatography results, the multiblock copolymers were essentially void of the oligomeric precursors. Despite the relatively large difference in solubility parameter between PC and PDMS, the multiblock copolymers exhibited significant partial miscibility between the two phases. As expected, the degree of partial miscibility was dependent on the molecular weight of the blocks with the extent of partial miscibility increasing with decreasing block molecular weights. Morphological characterization using small angle X‐ray scattering showed that, at a given PC block molecular weight, the uniformity of the two phase morphology increased with increasing PDMS block molecular weight, which is consistent with a decrease in the extent of phase mixing with increasing PDMS block molecular weight. ABSTRACT:A new series of aromatic copolyesters containing siloxane linkages were prepared by the melt polymerization of bisphenol A (BPA) with eugenol end-capped siloxane (EuSi), diphenyl terephthalate (DPT), and diphenyl isophthalate (DPI) in varying ratio in the temperature range 220 -290°C under reduced pressure in the presence of dibutyl tin dilaurate (DBTL) catalyst. The siloxane copolyesters prepared were characterized by FTIR, 1 H-NMR spectroscopy, solution viscosity, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The effect of incorporation of eugenol end-capped siloxane was studied on the properties of BPA/DPI/DPT copolyesters. The glass-transition temperature of copolyester was decreased from 184 to 70°C by incorporation of 20% of eugenol endcapped siloxane. All copolyesters were found to be soluble in commonly used aprotic polar solvents and had filmforming properties.

Basis for the Preparative Fractionation of a Statistical Copolymer (SAN) with Respect to Either Chain Length or Chemical Composition

The possibilities to fractionate copolymers with respect to their chemical composition on a preparative scale by means of the establishment of liquid/liquid phase equilibria were studied for random copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile (SAN). Experiments with solutions of SAN in toluene have shown that fractionation does in this quasibinary system, where demixing results from marginal solvent quality, take place with respect to the chain length of the polymer only. On the other hand, if phase separation is induced by a second, chemically different polymer one can find conditions under which fractionation with respect to composition becomes dominant. This opportunity is documented for the quasi-ternary system DMAc/SAN/polystyrene, where the solvent dimethyl acetamide is completely miscible with both polymers. The theoretical reasons for the different fractionation mechanisms are discussed.
