Preparations, Thermal Properties, and Tg Increase Mechanism of Inorganic/Organic Hybrid Polymers Based on Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes

Abstract: A series of novel hybrid poly(acetoxylstyrene-co-isobutylstyryl-POSS)s (PAS−POSS) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone-co-isobutylstyryl-POSS)s (PVP−POSS) are synthesized and characterized. The POSS content in these hybrids can be controlled by varying the monomer feed ratio. The polyhedral oligosilsesquoixane (POSS) moiety can effectively increase the T g of the resultant organic/inorganic hybrid polymer at a relatively high POSS content and produce the hybrid copolymer with narrower molecular weight distribution. The F… Show more

“…So, the presence of EG particles, at a relative smaller content, reduces the dipole-dipole interactions of PUPH molecules and, plays an inert diluent role to decrease the self-association interaction of PUPH molecules. Similar tendency has been observed in other composites [16,17,18,19,20].However, for high content (15-30 wt%) of EG particles, an increase in the T g is observed. This can be associated with the reduction of molecular mobility of the polyurethane chains imposed by the EG particles.…”

“…Similar tendency has been observed in other composites (Xu, et al, 2002;Ash, et al, 2002;Bershtein, et al, 2002;Arrighi, et al, 2003;Ash, et al, 2004). However, for high content (15 to 50 wt%) of EG, the T g is similar for all these samples, but higher than that corresponding to PUPH matrix.…”

“…Xu et al 32,33 investigated the Tg enhancement mechanism of POSS-based hybrid polymers employing FTIR spectra and reported that a strong interaction between POSS siloxane and the polar carbonyl group contributes to a significant Tg increase. In good agreement with their observations, we also found that, for instance, the FTIR spectrum of TPU/POSS exhibited peaks at 1310-1070 cm -1 ( Figure 2).…”
