Preparation, surface wetting properties, and protein adsorption resistance of well‐defined amphiphilic fluorinated diblock copolymers

Abstract: Novel well-defined amphiphilic fluorinated diblock copolymers P(PEGMA-co-MMA)-b-PC 6 SMA were synthesized successfully by RAFT polymerization and characterized by FTIR, 1 HNMR and GPC. For copolymer coatings, static contact angles, h, with water (h water 109.5 ) and n-hexadecane (h hexadecane 68.9 ) pointed to the simultaneous hydrophobic and lipophobic characteristics of the copolymer surfaces. Dynamic contact angle measurements indirectly demonstrated that copolymer films underwent surface reconstruction upo… Show more

“…17,18 Amphiphilic polymers with excellent antifouling performance increasingly attract the attention of researchers. However, the antifouling amphiphilic surface coatings reported in previous references were obtained from the lms of block or random copolymers of uorinated polymers and hydrophilic polymers, such as peruoroether-PEG, 17,19,20 P(PEGMA-co-MMA)-b-PC 6 SMA, 21 and amphiphilic homopolymers containing hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. The amphiphilic lms were prepared by spin-coating technique, casting technique and melting of copolymer grains onto the solid substrates.…”

“…The LCST graph of S1, S2, and S3 is shown in Figure 4 and the LSCT of S1, S2, and S3 is 52 • C, 56 • C, and 64 • C respectively. However, the LCST temperature of pure P(PEGMA) is 90 • C [39], this indicates that the introduction of silica and hydrophobic PMMA blocks can significantly reduce LCST temperature. From S1 to S3, LCST temperature increased with the growth of hydrophilic chain P(PEGMA) segments.…”

“…The hydrated layer could generate a steric repulsion to prevent protein absorption. Therefore, PEGMA-based coating materials have potential applications in protein-resistant materials [39,40]. For instance, the amphiphilic ternary copolymers P(H−P−A) were synthesized by free-radical polymerization [41].…”

“…On the other hand, the interaction between P(PEGMA) with water molecules or other solvents containing hydrogen by methoxy, ethoxy or hydroxy in the hydrophilic side chain [5] to make it as the materials used in the protein adsorption resistance because of its stereo-hindrance effect [6,7]. While, the hydrophobic segment provided by fluoropolymer could produce low surface tension and excellent chemical/physical properties [8][9][10], such as the alkyne-P(HEMA-co-MMA)-b-PPEGMA [11] and a brush-shaped block amphiphilic fluorinated copolymers P(PEGMA-co-MMA)-b-PC6SMA [12]. Furthermore, in order to improve the hardness of amphiphilic copolymers, poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is suggested to be introduced into copolymer with excellent physical/chemical properties [13].…”
