Preparation, reactions, and characterization of trichloroselenium(IV) and trichlorotellurium(IV) sulfonates: SeCl3(XSO3) and TeCl3(XSO3) with X = CF3, CH3, and p-CH3C6H4

Abstract: The compounds trichloroselenium(IV) and trichlorotellurium(IV) sulfonates, MCl3(XSO3) (M = Se and Te; X = CF3, CH3, and p-CH3C6H4), have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Infrared spectra suggest that the XSO3− group acts as a monodentate ligand in the Se compounds and as a tridentate ligand in the Te compounds. MCl3(CF3SO3) (M = Se and Te) are found to act as CF3SO3− ion acceptors, and compounds (C2H5)4N[MCl3(CF3SO3)2] have been isolated. Some other reactions inv… Show more

“…Interestingly treatment of 1-4 with nitromethane, acetone, chloroform, and dichloromethane rapidly precipitates fine M(OTs) 2 powders suggesting these may initially solubilize and rapidly eliminate coordinated DMF ligands. This behavior confirms that the DMF ligands are substitutionally labile under a variety of conditions [133,172,173,[181][182][183][184][185][186][187]196,197].…”

“…Structural reports describing sulfate and sulfonate derivatives are commonplace in the chemical literature. Among these are the Tutton [16,, halosulfonates [123][124][125][126][127][128], methane- [129][130][131][132][133][134][135][136], and arylsulfonate salts [133,135,[166][167][168][169][170][171][172][173][174][175][176][177][178][179][180][181][182][183]. These generally adopt very complicated structures owing to extensive hydrogen bonding interactions between anions and water molecules present.…”
